Adrift in San Clemente

By Community

One local artist’s way of helping out the environment.

Susan Grover has always been an ocean lover. She was born and raised on the beaches and in the surf here in San Clemente. She’s an avid swimmer, runner and beachcomber. So the idea came naturally to her to use the treasures and trash that had washed up on her beloved beaches to express her love of the ocean through art.

“My love of collecting the different kinds of wood came to me during one of my daily beach runs with my dog Max (who’s now in doggie Heaven),” says Susan. “There was just such an abundance of all types of wood, and not just drift wood, there was all kinds so I started to collect it.”

With this 2-½ acre organic oasis just down the road, the effort just became that much easier.

VR Farms, for short, is located just inside the entrance to the Bella Collina Towne and Golf Club. The farm is open to the public every Saturday from 10am to 1pm. And this isn’t your average produce stand, far from it. VR Farms owns the bragging rights to the seeds of over 30 vegetables with a lineage that can be traced back 150 years to Sicily. Their offerings include vegetables from Fava Beans to Zucchini Blossoms and everything in between.

By Community

It is said, follow your dreams and the money won’t be far behind. Long time San Clemente resident and artist Bob Harlow is one of the lucky ones who chose this path and it’s resulted in quite a successful and satisfying life.

Bob grew up on our beloved T-Street, with his 5 brothers and 1 sister and his parents still live in that very same childhood home to this day. He says his calling to draw surf cartoons came to him at a very young age.

“I started sending in my submissions to Surfer magazine when I was 10 years old, I remember running to the mailbox everyday hoping for that congratulatory letter from surfer, sadly none ever came.”
